The Duke Wound Management Institute
Wounds originating from various causes and conditions are among the most common of health problems. The healing of a wound is usually a natural process. But, sometimes, wounds don't heal as quickly or completely as they should.
The Duke Wound Management Institute is an innovative, multi-disciplinary program designed to address the unique challenges posed by problem wounds. The Institute links the famed clinical, basic science research, and educational excellence of Duke University Medical Center with the resources of Johnson & Johnson Medical, a large company committed to excellence in wound management.
Because the Wound Management Institute is a service of Duke University Medical Center, patients are assured of receiving comprehensive care from committed and caring clinicians. The Institute allows clinicians access to the latest wound care techniques, tools, research, and education opportunities.
In addition to providing patients with outstanding wound care, the Institute is dedicated to advancing wound care through research and education.

Our Services
The Duke Wound Management Institute offers the following services:
- Inpatient consult service for patients hospitalized at Duke Hospital.
- Patient care clinic providing outpatient access to physicians in all pertinent disciplines, advanced practice nurses, and other health professionals at a dedicated site within Duke Clinic.
- Education and training programs to disseminate the latest approaches to wound management.
- Treatment research initiatives to develop new therapeutic interventions for wounds, assess and improve outcomes, and identify standards of care.
Dedicated to Healing
The Duke Wound Management Institute team includes wound care physicians, mid-level practitioners, nurses, physical therapists, hyperbaric medicine technicians, dietician specialists, and counselors. Out patients also have access to surgeons, the diabetes management team, pain management services and the full range of outstanding health care services provided by Duke University Medical Center.
The Wound Management Institute team works closely with primary care physicians to ensure that care plans are as effective and easy to follow as possible.
Medical Directors
Claude S. Burton, III, MD, earned his medical degree at Duke University School of Medicine, and complete residencies in both dermatology and medicine at Duke University Medical Center. A world-renowned expert on wound management, Dr. Burton has special clinical interests in laser surgery of vascular lesions (including congenital vascular malformations and dilated vessels) and of chronic non-healing wounds, especially lower-extremity ulcers.
L. Scott Levin, MD, completed residencies in orthopaedic and plastic surgery at Duke University Medical Center after earning his medical degree from Temple University. his particular clinical interests include surgery of the hand and upper extremity, reconstructive microvascular surgery, and diabetic foot reconstruction. Dr. Levin is chief of Duke's Division of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery.
Administrative Director Edna Atwater brings clinical and administrative expertise based on 20+ years of experience as a registered nurse to her position. She has served on numerous national committees promoting the specialty of found care and is a frequent speaker at national meetings on the subject.
